Coordinators for NREGS in all panchayats Current liquor policy to continue THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V. S.Achuthanandan said here on Wednesday that the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) would be implemented in all districts of the State from April 1. Currently, the programme is under implementation in Palakkad and Wayanad districts. Talking to presspersons after a Cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister said the Cabinet had decided to appoint a non-gazetted officer in each panchayat as coordinator for the programme. The Chief Minister said that current year’s liquor policy would continue in the coming financial year also. The Cabinet had discussed and approved the policy (2008-09). Mr. Achuthanandan said that some naxalites had instigated the resistance to eviction for the Vallarpadam transhipment project at Moolampalli. The residents of Moolampalli had earlier agreed to vacate the premises on the basis of an agreement with the Collector. He added that there was pressure from the Private Secretary to the Prime Minister T.K.A. Nair for completion of the land acquisition and apprehension that the project would be lost. So, officials wanted to implement orders and acted sometimes forgetting human considerations in evicting the poor. That might not have been deliberate. He said that the Revenue and Fisheries Ministers would finalise a package for the evictees after discussions. He announced that the family of Rajani S. Anand who committed suicide while studying at the IHRD Engineering College, Adoor, would be given a solatium of Rs.1 lakh.
