Many elevators in city without licence
K. Lakshmi
CHENNAI: The Electrical Inspectorate has warned that operating elevators without licence, including those at residential buildings, would attract severe action such as disconnection of power supply.
A senior Electrical Inspectorate official told The Hindu that a sizable number of elevators in the city were being operated without licence. According to data provided during the recent Accountant General audit, of the 10,000 elevators in the city, nearly 4,000 were being operated without certification.
“Several service providers do not follow the rule of seeking permission for installation of new elevators and licence for working elevators. There is not much awareness about annual renewal of working elevators either,” he said. Though collapsible gate elevators were banned as per the Tamil Nadu Lift Act 1997, several owners, particularly in residential buildings, were seeking permission for extension of time to replace them.
