Sun Micro completes MySQL takeover

Users can access dev.mysql.com/downloads

SANTA CLARA: Sun Microsystems on Tuesday announced that it had completed the acquisition of Sweden-based MySQL AB, developer of the world’s most popular open source database, for $1 billion in total consideration. Sun also unveiled the immediate availability of MySQL’s complete portfolio of products and enterprise services backed by its 17,000-strong global sales and services organisation and its extensive international network of authorised distribution channels. Sun now provides a single, secure choice for customers and developers seeking to put MySQL into deployment on a global basis. Users can get started with free downloads at dev.mysql.com/downloads.

India conference

Anand Parthasarathy writes from Hyderabad:

“You are the largest developer community for Sun on the planet!” said Sun Microsystems Executive Vice President (Software) Rich Green, addressing the Indian software wizards who had assembled at the convention centre in Hyderabad on Wednesday for the annual SunTech Days conference. The acquisition overshadowed Sun’s technology gathering.

MySQL’s co-founder David Axmark, who happened to be in India, joined Mr. Rich Green to suggest how the former’s flagship products could strengthen Sun’s web-centric thrust that aims to make the network central to all computing. The MyySQL tool is seeing 50,000 free downloads, Mr Axmark said. The conference ends on Friday.
