India posts first win
New Delhi: National champion Achanta Sharath Kamal led the charge as India rallied to beat Argentina 3-1 in a Group ‘E’ encounter in the World team table tennis championships in Guangzhou, China, on Monday.
India, which lost 2-3 to Egypt on Sunday, was 0-1 down on Monday after two-time National champion Soumyadeep Roy lost the opening match 4-11, 9-11, 11-3, 5-11 to Song Liu.
However, Sharath and Subhajit Saha notched up smooth victories.
Sharath thrashed Gaston Diego Alto 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 before Saha got the better of Pablo Tabachink 11-8, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9.
In the reverse singles, Sharath beat Liu 7-11, 11-5, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6 in a close match to guide India to its first win of the tournament after getting a walk-over from Kazakhstan in the first match. — PTI
