Saif Alshamsy asserts his supremacy, clinches title

Kamesh Srinivasan

JAIPUR: Saif Alshamsy of the United Arab Emirates won the double trap gold with a seven-point margin, but the seasoned Indian shooters bit the dust on a windy day in the Asian Clay shooting championship at the Jagatpura Range here on Monday.

The 39-year-old Alshamsy shot rounds of 47, 48 and 43 in the qualification series and a 45 in the final. Led by Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, the Indian team had the class and credentials, but only Vikram Bhatnagar could make the final.

It proved no consolation as Bhatnagar ended up sixth, losing the tie-shoot to Hamad Al-Maari of Qatar.

Bhatnagar had shot well with consistent rounds of 44, 46 and 44 during qualification but a below par 39 in the final saw him slip from the third place to the sixth.

Rathore and Ronjan missed the final by two points. Rathore saw his form ebbing away in a series of 45, 43 and 41, while Ronjan’s improving form, reflected in a series of 38, 44 and 47, proved inadequate.

Double delight

Ajay Mittal won the junior gold with a score of 126. It was double delight as the Indian junior squad also had the honour of beating Qatar, the only other team in the fray, for the gold by a comfortable margin.
