Plan to modernise prison hospital

HEALTH FOR ALL: Central Prison in Tiruchi. —

TIRUCHI: Central Prison authorities here have planned to modernise the hospital on its sprawling premises to improve medical care for inmates.

The prison has over 2,000 inmates comprising 498 lifers, over 200 “long termers” and 1,120 remand prisoners.

A detailed proposal has been forwarded to the State Government, seeking Rs. 70 lakh for upgrading facilities, it is learnt.

The jail officials have held detailed discussions with Government Hospital doctors and senior officials of the Health Department in this regard.

The authorities intended to establish an intensive care, X-ray, blood test, scan and ECG units, prison authorities told The Hindu.

The 64-bed hospital has two doctors providing medical attention round-the-clock.

The capacity of the hospital will be increased to 100 beds after the Government gives its nod.

The officials have sought another doctor for the hospital.

A de-addiction centre also forms part of the proposed modernisation plan.

Minor repairs were carried out at the hospital at a cost of Rs. 1 lakh last month, officials said.

An eye camp would be conducted on the premises next month in association with a private hospital.
