Satyagraha to seek High Court Bench in city

Lawyers’ march on District Court premises

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Lawyers across the district boycotted court proceedings on Monday as part of the ongoing campaign for the establishment of a High Court Bench in the capital city. Advocates’ clerks also joined the agitation.

The functioning of the District Court at Vanchiyoor, the Sub-Courts and Munsiff Courts at Varkala, Attingal, Nedumangad, Kattakada and Neyyattinkara, the Lok Ayukta, the Family Court, the Vigilance and the Consumer Courts was affected by the boycott.

Thiruvananthapuram Bar Association president C.K. Sitaram said 5,000 lawyers and 1,500 clerks participated in the stir. “For the first time, government Pleaders and Assistant Public Prosecutors also joined the agitation,” he said.

The striking lawyers took out a march inside the District Court premises.

Public meeting

Inaugurating a public meeting marking the culmination of the march, Bharatiya Janata Party State president P.K. Krishnadas urged the High Court Chief Justice to withdraw his report to the government turning down the demand for a Bench in the city.

Meanwhile, the relay satyagraha in front of the court premises was extended to 24 hours as it entered the 11th day on Monday. The former MPs A. Charles, V.S. Sivakumar, A. Sampath and Thalekkunnil Basheer, NSS taluk union president M. Sangeethkumar, Kerala Vyapari Vyavasayi Ekopana Samithi president Peringamala Ramachandran, Thiruvananthapuram Chamber of Commerce vice-president Mohanachandran, Federation of Residents’ Associations, Thiruvananthapuram (FRAT) secretary Paraniyam Devakumar and United Democratic Front leader in the Corporation Council Johnson Joseph addressed the satyagraha. A motor rally will be taken out in the city on Tuesday to focus public attention on the need for a High Court Bench in the city. The action council will meet on Wednesday to chart out a strategy to intensify the agitation.
