Tharangampadi to be made a major tourist attraction

Danish Government is willing to support restoration of heritage buildings


CHENNAI: The Union Tourism Ministry has asked the State Tourism Department to prepare a plan to make Tharangampadi in Nagapattinam district a major tourist destination.

This was conveyed to Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation M. Rajaram by Union Tourism Secretary S. Banerjee, who made an on-the-spot assessment of tourist spots and examined the scope for new projects along East Coast Road, from Mamallapuram to Tharangampadi, during his two-day visit to the State recently.

Mr. Banerjee, who reviewed the progress of the Central Government schemes and development work at Mamallapuram, wanted restoration of the Governor’s Bungalow and improvements to the Danish fort.

He also felt that water and power supply, drainage, landscaping should be improved at Tharangampadi to attract more foreign tourists, especially those from Denmark and other European countries.

He said the Danish Government was willing to support the restoration of heritage buildings, including the fort, at Tharangampadi. The work would be taken up by the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage which he lauded for preserving heritage buildings. He was all praise for the local body for solid waste management and maintenance of places of tourist interest.

Mr. Banerjee also visited the rural tourism village at Idaiyanchavadi and Adi Sakthi Theatre for Art and Research near Puducherry.

Scope for improvement

State Tourism and Culture Secretary V. Irai Anbu apprise Mr. Banerjee about the tourism projects being executed at Mamallapuram. Mr. Rajaram explained the scope for further improvement on East Coast Road.

Nagapattinam Collector T.S. Jawahar took part in the discussion on the improvements to be made at Tharangampadi.
