Governor to auction his painting for a cause

CHENNAI: It was just a matter of few minutes for him to paint a couple of coconut palms, a house, mountains, fields.

The canvas that Governor Surjit Singh Barnala created for the launch of Cheshire Homes India - Chennai’s 50th anniversary on Saturday came to life almost like magic.

Earlier, Mr. Barnala went around the Durbar Hall of the Raj Bhavan to watch around 40 differently abled children of Cheshire Homes work on their paintings.

He said the inherent skills of the children needed to be explored and developed so that they could achieve distinction in life. Art, he said, was an inspiration, which came from within. Mr. Barnala, who agreed to the auctioning of his painting to raise funds for their projects, promised to give Rs 25,000 for the welfare of the children. He lauded the services of Chennai Cheshire Home in rehabilitating the physically challenged.

Maureen Hudson Murari, secretary of Cheshire Homes India, Chennai unit, said the organisation needed more funds to create residential and day-care facilities for the children. Cheshire Homes India, Chennai’s chairman A.C.Muthiah, was present.
