Workshop on nanotechnology ends

Kozhikode: A two-day workshop on nanotechnology organised by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), student branch of the National Institute of Technology, Calicut (NIT-C), concluded here on Sunday.

C.P. Girijavallabhan, Professor Emeritus of the International School of Photonics, Cochin University of Science and Technology, inaugurated the workshop, which featured talks covering almost every facet of this interdisciplinary field. In his address, he gave a description of some of the potentials impacts of the emerging field of nanotechnology.

P. Pradeep, Head, Department of Science and Humanities, NIT-C, gave an interesting insight on ‘Nanostructures: Fantasy, Hype and Reality’. This was followed by a talk on ‘Nanoelectronics,’ ‘Soft Materials’ and ‘Nanophotonics.’ The last talk of the day was delivered by S.K. Biswas from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore.

The final program was a visit to the well-equipped Nanotechnology Lab of the NIT-C and a demonstration to give the delegates a feel of the tools used in nanotechnology.

The second day of the workshop featured multi-dimensional talks on ‘Nanotechnology in biology and medicine,’ on ‘Cancer Nanomedicine’ by Manzoor from the Amrita Institute of Health Sciences, and on ‘Synthesis of Nanoparticles.’ Alain Dufresne of Joseph Fourier University, France, gave a talk on Nanocomposites. The event concluded with a talk by C.B. Sobhan, Professor of Mechanical Engineering and coordinator Nanotechnology Research Laboratory, NIT-C, on the ‘Advances and Challenges of Nanotechnology.’

Delegates were able to interact with the speakers and obtain a clear idea of nanotechnology applied in different streams like electronics, chemistry, fabrication, photonics and medicine.

The IEEE branch plans to conduct follow-up workshops.
