Bayern advances

LONDON: Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen each recorded a 5-1 win on Thursday to reach the next round of the UEFA Cup football.

Bayern beat Aberdeen to set up a meeting with 1983 champion Anderlecht, which got past Bordeaux, and Leverkusen routed 2000 winner Galatasaray.

Everton beat Brann 6-1 to advance, but its English rival Tottenham needed a string of saves from recalled goalkeeper Paul Robinson to earn a 1-1 draw with Slavia Prague and a place in the round of 16.

Another English side, Bolton, forced the biggest surprise when it drew 0-0 at Atletico Madrid to complete a 1-0 aggregate win over the Spanish powerhouse.

PSV Eindhoven, Fiorentina and Sporting Lisbon also advanced to the next two-legged round of Europe’s second-tier club competition in March. — Agencies
