Subbiah Pillai Trophy: Badrinath to lead

Chennai: S. Badrinath will captain the Tamil Nadu State team in the first two matches of the South Zone one-day limited overs cricket league for the K.S. Subbiah Pillai Trophy to be played from February 26 to March 3 here.

The team:

S. Badrinath (captain), M. Vijay, S. Anirudha, R. Prasanna, S. Suresh Kumar, K.H. Gopinath, R. Ashwin, R. Ramkumar, R. Srinivasan, P. Amarnath, V. Yomahesh, M.K. Shivakumar, K.B. Arun Karthick, C. Ganapathy and S. Vidyuth.

Dixit scalps five

K.B. Dixit took five for 18 as Modern ‘A’ defeated DAV ‘A’ in the TNCA under-13 city schools cricket tournament on Friday.

Shaurukh Khan (28 and four for five) and Mitchell Mannyas (61) helped Don Bosco ‘A’ to a comprehensive win over St. John’s ES & JC.

Half-centuries from Anirudh Raghavan and P. Muralidhar, and a four-wicket haul from Nilesh enabled Vidya Mandir ‘A’ beat PSBB ‘A’.

The scores: Don Bosco ‘A’ 210 in 50 overs (Sharukh Khan 28, Md. Fayaz 28, Mitchell Mannyas 61, R. Viswanath three for 27, Rohit Karan three for 29, Abishek Sambandh three for 58) bt St. John’s ES & JC 66 in 36.3 overs (V.N.R. Vignesh three for three, Sharukh Khan four for five).

PS SSS 74 in 41 overs (V.K. Karthikeyan three for 17) lost to St. Bede’s ‘A’ 75 for seven in 25 overs (R. Aravind Raj 33 n.o., M.S. Suraj three for 15, Aravind Mahadevan four for 29).

Vidya Mandir ‘A’ 198 in 44.2 overs (Anirudh Raghavan 59, P. Muralidhar 50, M. Karthik four for 30) bt PSBB ‘A’ 146 in 37.5 overs (Nilesh four for 31).

Dinesh, Kamesh shine

R. Dinesh (five for 36) and R. Kamesh (four for 32) combined as Fine Star CA registered a seven-wicket win in a Canara Bank-TDCA first division league match played here recently.

MSU registers win

Madras Sporting Union defeated Chennai Soccer 2-0 in the CFA senior division football league on Friday. Nagarathinam headed a cross from Marikani in the 49th minute. Kamalaharan made it 2-0 in the 70th.

In the first division, TNEB held Rangoon FC to a 1-1 draw. Mukundan scored for Rangoon in the 30th, after which Vijaykumar equalised in the 78th.

IOB overcomes SAI ‘A’

Defending champion Indian Overseas Bank fought off a spirited comeback by Sports Authority of India ‘A’ to win 3-2 in the senior division hockey league championship at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Friday. Olympian Adam Sinclair put IOB ahead with a goal from a penalty corner sequence and Gopinath slotted the second goal just before the end of the first half.

For the major part of the second half, IOB maintained the lead but when nine minutes remained for the finish SAI struck from a penalty corner by Albert John. Within minutes, IOB enlarged the lead further when Saravanakumar netted. Six minutes before the hooter, Yuvaraj hit in a penalty corner to keep the interest alive. But in the end IOB claimed full points.

Striker Vinod Rayar, who scored three goals, was the hero of SAI ‘B’ team’s 4-1 victory over Tamil Nadu Electricity Board after a 2-0 lead.

Vinod scored both the goals in the first half and added one more from a penalty corner which stretched beyond the regulation time.

Reuben scored the third goal for SAI, while Selvakumaran was the scorer for TNEB.

In the morning, Central Excise and City Police played out a goalless draw.

Mohit wins title

Tamil Nadu’s J. Mohit Mayur defeated Rohit Bisht of Delhi 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the boys’ under-16 final of the UC MAS-Singaram Pillai all-India junior tennis tournament (Super Series) on Friday.

MP’s Aishwarya Agrawal won the girls’ under-16 title, beating Vaidehi Bhagvat (Mah) 6-3, 6-4.

Other results:

Singles: U-14: Boys: Ramkumar (TN) bt Vinod Gowda (Kar) 6-3, 6-3.

Girls: Prarthana Thombre (Mah) bt Vaidehi Bhagvat (Mah) 6-4, 6-1.
