Long discussion on the IPL at ICC meeting

Special Correspondent

Mumbai: The BCCI Secretary Niranjan Shah, who attended the International Cricket Council (ICC) CEC meeting at Kuala Lumpur said the Indian Premier League (IPL) was discussed for three hours.

“The CEC members backed the BCCI-promoted IPL and maintained its position against the unsanctioned ICL competition and said that players would not be permitted to take part in that event. The BCCI also informed the ICC that international commitments would always take precedence over IPL and that players would have to obtain NOCs from their cricket boards,” said Mr. Shah.

With regard to sledging, Mr. Shah said he and Sunil Gavaskar, the Chairman of ICC’s Cricket Committee, had strongly campaigned to eliminate it from the game. Mr. Shah said Gavaskar had told the members that there had been no sledging at all in his time and that players ought not use foul language.

In an apparent reference to Gavaskar’s comments on match referee Mike Procter after the latter had banned Harbhajan Singh for three Tests for allegedly racist remarks directed at Andrew Symonds, the members had also wanted ICC officials to refrain from public criticism of events surrounding a match, he said.
