Karnataka bags gold

MANGALORE: The Karnataka State boys’ under-14 team has bagged the gold medal in the four-day 53rd National School Chess Championship organised by the Directorate of Sports and Youth Welfare, Assam, which concluded on Friday.

Karnataka, which scored 19 out of a possible 24 points, bagged the top honours for the first time in this category.

The team comprised of Karthi H. S. (Bangalore), Viani Antonio D’ Cunha and Gahan M. G. (Mangalore), Niranjan Navalgund (Belgaum) and Yashas D. (Belgaum).

The State girls’ under-17 team, which scored 17.5 points out of a possible 24 points, secured the silver medal Shruthi K. and Shristi J. Shetty (Shimoga), Sneha V. Karekar (Belgaum), Akshata R. Bhat (Hassan) and Sindhu K. G. (Bangalore) comprise the team. — Staff Correspondent
