Roddick makes short work of Nishikori

SAN JOSE: Top-seeded Andy Roddick easily defeated in-form Japanese teenager Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals of the SAP Open on Thursday. Roddick needed just 63 minutes to defeat Nishikori, who saw his eight-match ATP win streak snapped by the No. 6 player in the world.

Nadal upset

Rafael Nadal became the fourth straight seeded player to lose on Thursday, in the second round of the ABN Amro tennis championship in Rotterdam. The second-ranked Spaniard, who had been the last remaining seeded player in the draw, lost to Andreas Seppi of Italy 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Top-seeded Serb Ana Ivanovic withdrew from the Qatar Open, in Doha, on Thursday after injuring her left ankle while beating Olga Govortsova of Belarus the previous day. The tournament then lost second seed Svetlana Kuznetsova of Russia, who was beaten 6-3, 7-6(8) by Austrian left-hander Sybille Bammer. Venus Williams also crashed out, falling 6-3, 6-3 to Dominika Cibulkova.
