Kumar shines in SNC’s big win

Madurai: A fine hat-trick by Kumar helped Saraswathy Narayanan College defeat ‘Jubiliants’ of host Subbalakshmi Lakshmipathy College of Science 5-1 and enter the semifinals of the TVR memorial Trophy State-level inter-collegiate five-a-side football tournament at TVR Nagar near here on Friday.

The results:

Quarterfinals: Saraswathy Narayanan College 5 bt Jubiliants of SLCS 1; Arulanandar College, Karumathur 5 bt Vikram College of Engg., Sivagangai 2; Ayya Nadar Janakiammal College, Sivakasi 6 bt VHNSN College, Virudhunagar 1 (Antony); SLCS 4 bt Mannar Thirumalai Naicker College 0.

Yadava College in semifinals

Yadava College, Madurai beat St. Joseph’s College, Tiruchi 25-19, 18-25, 25-19 to enter the semifinal round robin league of the Dr. Soundaram memorial Trophy State-level inter-collegiate volleyball tournament at Gandhigram on Friday.

Other teams for the league will be Sathya Bama University, Chennai, Jamal Mohamed College, Tiruchi and host Gandhigram Rural University.

In the basketball tournament, Gandhigram Rural University beat Loyola College, Chennai in the three-team group ‘B’ league.

The results: GRU 67 (Jeyachandran 31, Chandra Kumar 25) bt Loyola College, Chennai 54 (Prem Anand 24, Prabakaran 10).

Mini-marathon

The Kanyakumari Mini-marathon race organised jointly by Tamil Nadu State Athletic Association and Kanyakumari District Athletic Association will be held on Saturday.

The main race for men (21.4km) will be flagged off by Mr. Indra Kumar, Commissioner of Income Tax, Madurai at 4.30 p.m. at the Gandhi Mandapam, Kanyakumari and the finishing point will be Anna Stadium, Nagercoil. The participants on the way to Nagercoil will be joined by women and boys (8km) at Suchindram at 5.15 p.m. and then they will be joined by boys and girls (5km) at Edalakudy before finishing at the Anna Stadium.

Karate camp

A one-day kumite and referee training camp, organised jointly by the Champion Karate Academy (U.S.A.) and the Olympic Karate Academy (India), will be held at the Chinnathaayammal Hall (RHR Hotel) on February 23 at 7 a.m.
