Army XI pips Indian Oil

NEW DELHI: A.K. Majhi fired the winning goal a minute from close as Army XI rallied from two-goal deficit to beat IndianOil 5-4 in the quarterfinal league match of the Maharaja Ranjit Singh hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Friday.

Anil Kumar Ekka had put Army ahead in the sixth minute but Deedar Singh scored twice to give Indian Oil a handy lead. In between, Deepak Thakur and Tyron Pereira had helped increase the lead.

But Army shot back through Sunil Ekka, C. S. Khalco and Chittaranjan Singh before Majhi struck the final goal.

In other match, Bharat Petroleum defeated Air India (North) 4-2 with Amar Aiyamma, Sabu Varkey, Pundalik Bellary and Gurpreet Singh finding the target. Dhanraj Pillay and Birender Lakra were the scorers for Air India (North). — Principal Correspondent
