BANGALORE: A 23-year-old woman committed suicide at her house in MICO Layout police station limits on Wednesday as she was being allegedly harassed for more dowry by her husband and in-laws. The police said B.V. Mamatha, mother of a one-year-old baby boy, hanged herself from the ceiling fan at her house on 6th Main, 2nd Stage, BTM Layout, around 9.30 p.m. on Wednesday when she was alone. She had married Vishnu Verma, a systems engineer with an IT company, two years ago. According to the police, Mamatha had a left a note that no one was responsible for her death and she was taking the extreme step as she was depressed. However, Mamatha’s father B.L. Venkataswamy, a retired Ranger Forest Officer from Hassan district, on Thursday lodged a police complaint that his daughter had committed suicide as Mr. Verma, his mother, sister, brother-in-law and aunt were torturing her for more dowry. Assistant Commissioner of Police (MICO Layout sub-division) M.B. Rajendra Prasad told The Hindu that on the basis of Mr. Venkataswamy’s complaint they had registered a case under the Dowry Prevention Act and arrested Mr. Verma. DetainedSumit, a computer engineer from Ahmedabad, has lodged a complaint with the West Division police on Thursday that the owners of the client company had detained him for the past dew days. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Harishekaran said that Ramesh and Dhananjay of a company in Magadi Road bought a software package. When the software developed problems, the supplier sent Sumit to rectify the flaws. When he was unable to do so, Ramesh and Dhananjay detained him. Killed in accidentA pedestrian was killed on the spot after she was knocked down by a BMTC bus near Nayandahalli on Mysore Road around 9.45 p.m. on Wednesday.The police gave her name as Kuppamma (45), a resident of Pantharapalya. Falls to deathA construction worker died after he fell from an apartment under construction near Electronics City on Tuesday night. The police gave his name as Bidan Birala (28) of West Bengal.
