Jamia’s new professor emeritus


Renowned painter Jatin Das has been appointed professor emeritus in the Faculty of Fine Arts at Jamia Millia Islamia. Das taught painting and art history at Jamia from 1977 to 1988 in the Department of Fine Arts and Education. One of the most prolific figurative painters, he is also a graphic artist, sculptor, muralist and a poet.

He studied painting at the J. J. School of Art in Mumbai and since then has participated in many important national and international art exhibitions. Jamia had earlier honoured two eminent artists — Paramjeet Singh and Ramachandran Nair — as professors emeritus. Both have taught in the Department of Fine Arts in the past.

During his recent visit to India, Russian Prime Minister Victor Zubkov decorated Rector-II of Jawaharlal Nehru University with the Pushkin Medal for promotion of Russian language and culture. Instituted by Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2007, the Pushkin Medal was awarded to five other luminaries at a small ceremony attended by Mr. Zubkov at Maurya Sheraton in the Capital this past week.

Prof. Kumar teaches Russian at the Centre for Russian Studies in JNU’s School of Language, Literature and Culture Studies.

Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, has announced its third General Management Programme for defence officers. The six-month programme is open to both short service commission officers and others. The programme was inaugurated earlier this week by Director General (Resettlement), Indian Army Major General S. G. Chatterji. The course will equip defence officers with a basic understanding of the managerial systems and processes. Of the 65 officers scheduled to pursue th e course, nine are lady officers.

“The idea is to develop a holistic perspective and global mindset to understand issues of an enterprise” said programme coordinator Prof. Sushil Kumar.

Pearl School of Business, Gurgaon, in strategic partnership with Nottingham Trent University (NTU), U.K., has introduced a three-year BBA programme for undergraduates.

The programme has been designed by the faculty of Pearl School of Business in collaboration with NTU’s Nottingham Business School and Babson College, U.S.

The course will seek to develop among its students knowledge of business, its role and functions, understanding of entrepreneurship and the skills of effective performance in a real business situation,” said a release.

The Department of Zoology at Aligarh Muslim University felicitated its alumnus and the leader of the first Indian expedition to Antarctica, S. Z. Qasim, and Vice-Chancellor P.K. Abdul Azis this past week.

While Prof. Qasim was bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 95th Indian Science Congress at Visakhapatnam this January, Prof. Azis recently received a gold medal for excellence in Environmental Sciences by Rajiv Gandhi Chair in Contempor ary Studies at Cochin University of Science and technology, Kerala,

Delhi University’s grand old Hindu College celebrated its 109th Founder’s Day this past Friday. Prof. M. G. K. Menon, president of Indian Statistical Institute, was the chief guest. Many students were awarded merit prizes. Imtiaz Ali, the director of the hit Bollywood film “Jab We Met” who is an alumnus of the college, also attended the function.
