200 new buses under Rs. 250-crore plan

Special Correspondent

MADURAI: A plan to develop the infrastructure of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Madurai Division, has been drawn up at an estimated cost of Rs. 250 crore under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, Collector S.S. Jawahar has said.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, he said that the fund would be utilised to construct bus depots and terminuses.

The fleet would be augmented with 200 new buses while 400 old buses would be replaced with new vehicles. There were plans to operate air-conditioned buses on select routes.

Earlier, the Minister for Adi-Dravidar Welfare, A. Tamilarasi, flagged off 31 new buses, including 25 ‘semi-low floor’ and three yellow line / blue line buses.

A majority of these buses would ply from Periyar Bus Stand and Tirumangalam to various destinations in and around Madurai.

The TNSTC (Madurai Division) Managing Director, N. Vijayarajan, said that the division had recorded a growth of 7 per cent in overall earnings in 2007 compared to the previous year. The fares of semi-low floor and other modern buses would be higher compared to ordinary services in view of additional amenities. Free bus passes would not be entertained in these buses. Since the modernised buses had automatic doors, accidents owing to footboard travel would be averted.
