KUWAIT: A facile win in the morning and a disaster in the evening. That was the experience of the Indian women’s team on Monday, the opening day of the team event in the Asian senior squash championship here. The fine 3-0 win over lowly Macau was overshadowed by the 0-3 loss to Korea in two Pool A matches that almost put India out of the race for the last four berth in this four-team league. India next faces the defending champion Malaysia. In terms of rating Korea is above India but the way Anwesha Reddy began she could have won the first singles. But after leading two games, she lost her way against Ahn Eun Tschn. Surbhi Misra went down next to Song Sun Mi to give Korea the winning margin which it stretched to 3-0 when Joshna Chinappa, surprisingly lost to Park Eun Ok. In the morning, however, Anwesha, Harita Om Prakash and Joshna had breezed past the Macau opposition, the tie ending in 33 minutes. Later the men made heavy weather before winning 3-0 over gritty Japan in the three-team Pool C. Ritwik Bhattacharya and Siddarth Suchde won though the latter was stretched. Saurav Ghosal completed the rout. CorrectionMeanwhile, Malaysia’s Mohammad Azlan Iskandar won his maiden men’s singles title on Sunday, beating teammate Ong Beng Hee 5-9, 8-10, 9-5, 9-0, 9-7 in the final, and not as reported on Monday. The results: Men: Pool A: Malaysia bt Chinese-Taipei 3-0; Pool B: Pakistan bt Korea 3-0; Pool C: Japan bt Qatar 3-0; India bt Japan 3-0; Pool D: Kuwait bt China 3-0; Hong Kong bt Macau 3-0. Women: Pool A: India bt Macau 3-0 (Anwesha Reddy bt Maria Estela Gageiro Madeira 9-0, 9-0, 9-0; Harita Omprakash bt Sam Hei tong 9-0, 9-0, 9-1; Joshna Chinappa bt Cha Si Man 9-0, 9-0, 9-1); lost to Korea 0-3 (Anwesha Reddy lost to Ahn Eujn Tschn 9-7, 10-9, 4-9, 6-9, 0-9; Surbhi Misra lost to Song Sun Mi 4-9, 9-10, 6-9; Joshna Chinappa lost to Park eun Ok 9-0, 3-9, 1-9, 3-9 ); Malaysia bt Korea 3-0; Pool B: Hong Kong bt China 3-0; Japan bt Chinese-Taipei 3-0.
