I. Ilavazhagi. CHENNAI: India’s I. Ilavazhagi bagged her maiden women’s title in the fifth World carrom championship at Palais Des Festivals, Cannes, France, on Sunday. The 24-year-old defeated P. Nirmala, also of India, 25-11, 25-11 in the final. Ilavazhagi, who won the National title recently in Chennai, had overcome the former World champion Rashmi Kumari in straight games in the semifinal. The daughter of a daily wage-earner, Ilavazhagi has been struggling to make both ends meet. One only hopes that the World title will help her land a job quickly. Players from Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Bangladesh, USA, United Kingdom, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Switzerland and France participated in the championships. The Indian men’s team lost to Sri Lanka in the final. — Principal Correspondent
