Kalyan Singh, Raj Babbar seats now reserved constituencies

LUCKNOW: The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Kalyan Singh, Jan Morcha leader Raj Babbar and Congress MP Jitin Prasad will have to look for new seats following the recommendation of the Delimitation Commission redefining the physical and caste contours of the Lok Sabha constituencies in the State.

The panel report was approved by the Union Cabinet last week. The 2009 Lok Sabha elections as well as the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls will be held in accordance with the Commission’s recommendations.

Bulandshahr, Agra and Shahjahanpur represented by Mr. Singh, Mr. Babbar and Mr. Prasad are among the six general constituencies now included in the reserved category. The other three are Etawah, home district of the former Chief Minister Mulayam Singh; Bahraich and Machhlishahr. The number of Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh has been kept at 80, of which 17 seats have been reserved.

The reserved seats are Nagina, Bulandshahr, Hathras, Agra, Shahjahanpur, Hardoi, Misrikh, Mohanlalganj, Etawah, Jalaun, Kaushambi, Barabanki, Bahraich, Bansgaon, Lalganj, Machhlishahr and Robertsganj. The number of reserved seats was the same as that in the 2004 Lok Sabha polls.

Twelve new constituencies including Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Amroha and Fatehpur Sikri have replaced the 12 existing ones.
