Chennai hosts senior police officers’ meeting

CHENNAI: A meeting of senior police officers, many of them Commissioners, from seven major cities in the country was held here on Monday to chalk out the requirements of the force from the perspective of providing enhanced security, over the next 10 years.

This was the fourth in a series of meetings of the Committee of Commissioners of mega cities constituted by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, said D.N. Jadhav, Mumbai Commissioner of Police and convener of the committee. Besides Mr. Jadhav, the meeting was attended by Commissioners of Police of Kolkata (G.M. Chakravarthy); Chennai (G. Nanchil Kumaran); Ahmedabad (S.K. Saikia); Director (Bureau of Police Research and Development), New Delhi, R.C. Arora; Additional Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, N.S. Megharikh; and Joint Commissioner of Police, Hyderabad, Harish Gupta. Additional Commissioner of Police (Kolkata) Kuldeep Singh and Joint Commissioner (Mumbai) Hemant Karkare also participated.

The technical team will meet in Mumbai shortly. Proposals submitted by the police commissioners would be studied and tabled for approval by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Talking to The Hindu, Mr. Kumaran said Monday’s meeting discussed the requirement with regard to infrastructure, human resources and additional finances.

It also discussed emerging areas such as cyber communication.
