14,500 colour TV sets to be given away this year: Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare

79 panchayats covered in Theni district so far

THENI: As many as 14,500 colour television sets would be distributed to beneficiaries in the district this year. Identification of eligible beneficiaries has already been commenced. The district administration has covered 79 out of total 130 village panchayats in two phases. Rest of the panchayats would be covered in the coming years, according to A. Thamizharasi, Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare.

She was distributing colour television sets and free house pattas to beneficiaries at Uthamapalayam near here on Sunday. The Government was implementing several schemes for the uplift of poor people. But the previous Government shelved several good schemes citing financial crisis. Loans to self-help groups had been disbursed liberally for empowerment and economic independence of women in rural areas.

A total of 61,968 sets, including 12,809 sets in Andipatti, 15,568 in Bodinaickanur, 10,557 in Cumbum, 11,718 in Periyakulam and 11,316 in Theni were distributed so far. Adi Dravida families alone had received 10,128 sets so far, she added. “Television sets would provide great relief to workers and poor people who worked hard throughout the day.”

In his address, Collector Har Sahay Meena said that free house pattas had been issued to 12,617 beneficiaries, including 3,305 Adi Dravida people. Over 1,900 acres had been disbursed to 1,744 landless labourers in six phases of disbursement.

Identity cards had been given to 2.53 lakh farm labourers under social security scheme so far. Welfare aid worth Rs.1.48 crore to 2,434 farm workers was disbursed.

Ration cards had been issued to 9,305 families so far. Distribution of free cycles to school students was also expedited, he said. “People should avail these schemes improve standard of living”

Later, Ms. Thamizharasi distributed free gas stoves, television sets, house and land pattas, and welfare aid worth Rs.3.08 crore to 4,536 beneficiaries. District Revenue Officer U. Thasanathan and Special Representative for Tamil Nadu in New Delhi P. Selvendran spoke.

Virudhunagar

The Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, distributed free colour television sets at Uppathur near Sattur on Sunday. The Minister gave away TV sets to 576 families.

A total of 7,117 TV sets would be distributed in the third phase. Rajapalayam Assembly constituency would be given 2,257 sets, Srivilliputtur 1,955, Sivakasi 1,254 and Aruppukottai 1,220.

The Minister also gave away benefits under various schemes to 768 persons at a cost of Rs. 50.23 lakh.
