Joint action for rodent control in trains, stations
Shastry V. Mallady and S. Vijay Kumar
MADURAI: The Directorate of Public Health (DPH) has mooted a joint action with the Southern Railway for upkeep of sanitation on and off trains. Following a random survey undertaken at major stations across the State, the DPH has forwarded a set of recommendations to the Health Secretary that includes action plan to control rodents, pests and mosquito density at railway stations.
A meeting of health and railway officials is expected to be held in Chennai during the first week of March to discuss the sanitation issues.
The survey had identified absence of chlorinated water and high mosquito density in some stations and rodent menace in many upper class coaches. “We feel that a joint action could lead to improvement of public health standards in railway stations,” Additional Director of Public Health, S. Elango, told The Hindu on Sunday.
Recommendations included effective fumigation techniques, solid waste management and drainage aspects.
