Awareness of human rights on the rise in villages too, says SHRC chairperson

Special Correspondent

TAMBARAM: Awareness of human rights, its violations and the fora available for redressal were on the rise among people, even in rural areas of Tamil Nadu, said to Justice A.S. Venkatachalamurthy, Chairperson of State Human Rights Commission.

Taking part in a ‘Human rights awareness day’ function at S.D.N.B.Vaishnav College for Women, Chromepet organised recently, he said more and more people were approaching the Commission with the hope of having their grievances resolved. In 2006, the Commission received more than 7,000 complaints and the number touched 10,000 last year, he said.

Addressing students, the Chairperson said the Commission could only direct the police to provide protection. They would take up investigations if the law enforcers did not perform did their duty or exceeded their powers, Justice Venkatachalamurthy told students.

Advocate Sudha Ramalingam said it was the duty of all sections of society to ensure that human rights was not violated. When students posed questions on why child labour persisted despite laws and presence of bodies like SHRC, she said students, too, could contribute for the cause.

Apart from boycotting institutions that employed child labour, the educated youth must protest by drawing the attention of bodies such as SHRC and other government agencies when they noticed children employed in workplaces while they ought to be in school, Ms. Sudha Ramalingam added.

Principal of the college T.Sumithra said they planned to include human rights as an integral part of the curriculum for students.
