Tuticorin: The Department of Agriculture will procure a total of 339 tonnes of certified class seeds of various crops being raised at select farms in the district under seed multiplication programme, for distribution during next financial year. A total of Rs.53.57 lakh has been earmarked towards procurement of certified class seeds, which would ensure higher crop yield from the district vis-À-vis this fiscal. Speaking to The Hindu, S. Arumugam, Joint Director of Agriculture, said that the seeds acquired would be distributed to the farmers through the 28 Agricultural Extension Centres operated by the department in the district, at subsidised rates. “The distribution of certified class seeds which are free from impurities and diseases, at appropriate periods is essential, since it has been identified that non-availability of adequate quantity of high quality seeds has been a constraint for agriculture production,” he added. Of the seeds to be procured, 200 tonnes would be of certified seeds of paddy varieties like ASD 16, ADT 36, ADT 43, ADT 39, TRY 2 and ADT 45. The rest include 24 tonnes of millet seeds, 75 tonnes of pulses seeds, 12 tonnes of cotton seeds, 20 tonnes of groundnut seeds, four tonnes of gingelly seeds and four tones of sunflower seeds. “The foundation seeds being used for the production of certified seeds of paddy were produced at theAgriculture College and Research Institute at Killikulam near here. While the foundation seeds in the case of other crops were being raised at department-recognised seed farms situated at farmers’ holdings, ” Mr. Arumugam said. Replacement ratioThe Joint Director said that the distribution of 339 tonnes of seeds would help to maintain the seed replacement ratio (SRR) in the district, which was the percentage of the total cropped area of which seed would by replaced by the department, according to the norms set by the Government. The SRR was fixed at 17 per cent for paddy, 10 per cent for cotton (rain-fed variety), 6 per cent each for sorghum and maize, 17.7 per cent for blackgram, 11.7 per cent for green gram, 50 per cent for sunflower, 15 per cent for gingelly and 5 per cent for groundnut.
