Programme for mentally challenged begins

A trust in Virudhunagar plans to establish a residential school for children on 10-acre land, says Minister

VIRUDHUNAGAR: The Minister for Backward Classes Welfare, K.K.S.S.R. Ramachandran, inaugurated a training programme for mentally challenged and mentally retarded children and their parents here on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that such training programmes would instil confidence in affected children and give happiness to their parents.

“Aware of difficulties”

Stating that he was aware of the difficulties faced by the parents in bringing those children for training programmes through public transport vehicles, he said Sapthagiri Rehabilitation Trust, Virudhunagar had proposed to establish a residential school for those children. The school would come up on a 10-acre land, he added. A total of 52 children would undergo the four-day training.

The Collector, V. Chandrasekaran, said that the district administration would extend all possible help to the non-governmental organisation in setting up the school. The Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, has instructed to provide all training programmes to help the children move independently.

The district administration has given Rs. 3.44 lakh assistance to the NGO for the training programme, he added.

Survey under way

Stating that a survey of mentally challenged children was under way in the district, Mr. Chandrasekaran said that all those children upto the age of six years would be given training. The district administration was taking all efforts to identify physically challenged persons and provide them Rs. 500 as monthly assistance, he added. Mr. Chandrasekaran said that national identity card for physically challenged persons were being issued on every Thursdays. He urged them to get the cards to avail themselves of Government assistances.

The District Rehabilitation Officer, Ramakrishnan, was present.
