Double delight for Dindigul

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: The Dindigul team, which won the State-level men’s basketball title.

TIRUCHI: Dindigul bagged both the men’s and women’s titles in the State-level basketball tournament, conducted by Tiruchi unit of Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu, here on Sunday.

In the men’s final, Dindigul scripted a comfortable 50-27 win over Tiruchi. Dindigul was clearly the better side, with its players good at offence and defence. Also, it did not have much of a problem penetrating Tiruchi’s weak defence and opened up a 28-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

With Dindigul tightening its defence in the second, Tiruchi found the going tough. The latter could manage only five points in the session and Dindigul, with a 24-point advantage at the halfway mark, took firm control of the match.

Tiruchi hoopsters tried hard to bring down the lead in the third, but their attempts to convert three-pointers did not fetch the desired results, as Dindigul raced to an easy victory in the end. Jayachandran and Gnanavel scored 14 points apiece for the winner.

In the women’s final, Dindigul downed Karur 45-26. The winner led 27-17 at half time.

Forest Minister N. Selvaraj gave away the prizes in the presence of Regional Senior Manager, Tiruchi unit of SDAT, N. Sundaram.

The results: Men: Final: Dindigul 50 (Jayachandran 14, Gnanavel 14) bt Tiruchi 27. Semifinals: Dindigul 57 (Gnanavel 18, Babu 14) bt Madurai 27; Tiruchi 77 (Ramkumar 22) bt Theni 73 (Narasimhan 16).

Women: Final: Dindigul 45 (Kalaiselvi 14) bt Karur 26 (Vasuki 10).

Semifinals: Dindigul 58 (Tamilarasi 13) bt Chennai 25 (Mahalakshmi 10); Karur 85 (Vasuki 36) bt Tiruchi 77 (Prathiba 32).
