PEOPLE–FRIENDLY STEP: Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin distributing financial assistance to a beneficiary at Tiruvallur on Sunday. TIRUVALLUR: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s involvement in finalising tenders for supply of colour television sets helped the Government save up Rs.163 crore last year, Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said on Sunday. Distributing free television sets and LPG stoves at a function held at the Aranvoyal panchayat near here, he said that since the tender process was adopted for the purchase, the companies came forward to supply television sets at competitive rates. The all-party MLAs’ committee for the scheme, headed by the Chief Minister, had cut down the total cost of 25 lakh sets by Rs.163 crore. A total of 25 lakh sets were bought for free distribution last year, he said. Though it was planned to purchase 30 lakh sets for the current year, he said, the Government decided to increase the number by another 4.24 lakh, utilising the amount saved last year. In Tirvallur district, 86,699 sets had been distributed to people of 193 revenue villages. A total of 14,531 families had received LPG stoves, he said. Mr. Stalin also distributed welfare aid, worth Rs.2.86 crore, under various schemes. Fisheries Minister K.P.P. Samy; Sriperumpudur MP A. Krishnasamy; Tiruvallur MLA Sivaji; Pallipattu MLA E.S.S. Raman; and Collector Rajendrakumar took part in the function. Distributing television sets and LPG stoves at a function held at Kilambi near Kancheepuram, Labour Welfare Minister T.M. Anbarasan said 2.17 lakh out of this year’s target of eight lakh stoves had been distributed so far. Last year, 3,03,816 stoves were distributed all over the State. Besides these welfare schemes, the Government had distributed a financial assistance of Rs. 60 crore to workers of the unorganised sector. Uthiramerur MLA K. Sundar said the Union Government had allocated only eight lakh LPG connections to Tamil Nadu this year as against the Chief Minister’s request for 15 lakh connections. Collector Santosh K. Misra said LPG stoves had been distributed to 24,835 families in the district so far. About 22,500 families in Perambalur district and 33,802 families in Ariyalur district have been provided free colour television sets so far, Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology A. Raja has said. About 18,541 persons were provided gas stoves in the combined Perambalur district, he said, after distributing television sets to 750 families and gas stoves to 950 families at Adhanur in Perambalur district. Minister for Environment and Sports T.P.M. Mohideen Khan distributed television sets to 1,031 families and gas stoves to 1,400 families at a function held at Sirukalathur near Senthurai in Ariyalur district. As many as 87,000 television sets will be distributed in Nagapattinam district this year, Minister for Commercial Taxes S.N.M. Ubayadullah has said. The Minister distributed 1,063 television sets to the beneficiaries of Neikuppai, Virkudi, Kongarayanallur and Narimanam and LPG stoves to 50 families at a function held at Neikuppai, highlighted the various welfare schemes and projects being implemented by the State Government for the benefit of the people. At Gandhavarkottai in Pudukottai district, Minister of State for Environment and Forests S. Regupathy handed over television sets to 4,185 beneficiaries and LPG stoves to 2,352 beneficiaries. A total of 14,500 television sets will be distributed in Theni district in 2008, Minister for Adi Dravida Welfare A. Thamizharasi has said. She distributed gas stoves, television sets, house and land pattas and welfare aid to 4,536 beneficiaries.
