DISTRIBUTING TV SETS: Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan addressing a function organised at Kadampuliyur near Neyveli on Sunday. — CUDDALORE: Finance Minister K. Anbazhagan has said that all eligible families in Tamil Nadu will get free colour television sets, though there might be “some delay.” The beneficiaries would be covered in six to seven phases and not at one go. He was speaking at a function organised at Kadampuliyur near Neyveli for the third phase of distribution of TV sets on Sunday. In the first two phases, 25,30,000 sets worth Rs. 694 crore were distributed all over the State and in the third phase, 34,25,000 sets costing Rs. 750 crore would be given away. The remaining households would be covered soon. Mr. Anbazhagan said the TV sets would enable the poor and the downtrodden to learn about the happenings the world over. It would also bring cheer, happiness and satisfaction to their life. He commended Panruti MLA T. Velmuguran (Pattali Makkal Katchi) for having pacified those who got restive over the delay in getting the TV sets. Having an outspoken ally in the Democratic Progressive Alliance would help the government overcome any problems, Mr. Anbazhagan said. The State government had provided jobs to two lakh people within 21 months, and doles ranging from Rs. 150 to Rs. 300 to the educated unemployed. No other government could have done so much for women as the Karunanidhi government, the Minister said. Mr. Karunanidhi had said that he would request the Centre to withdraw the eligibility criterion of 60 per cent marks for Adi Dravidar students to get scholarship and if it did not oblige, the State government would arrange for funds. Union Minister of State for Law K.Venkatapathi, Health Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, Collector Rajendra Ratnoo, MLAs T. Velmurugan, D. Ravikumar, Saba. Rajendran and G. Aiyappan spoke. VillupuramHigher Education Minister K. Ponmudy gave away 5,861 TV sets worth Rs. 1.28 crore to the beneficiaries at a function held at Adhikolapakkam in Thirukkoilur block near here on Sunday. He also distributed free gas stoves, house site ‘pattas’ and financial assistance to self-help groups, all totalling over Rs. 2.94 crore, to 8,495 beneficiaries. Mr. Ponmudy said the tender process for selecting the company for the supply of television sets was conducted in a transparent manner in the presence of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and leaders of political parties. Within two years of coming to power, Mr. Karunanidhi had fulfilled all the poll promises. Even those who had raised doubts over the implementation of the welfare schemes were benefited the most, Mr. Ponmudy said. Collector Brajendra Navnit, MLAs S. Sivaraj, T. Udhyasuryan, K. Thirunavukkarasu and A. Angayarkanni, and Adhikolapakkam panchayat president K.Jayaraman participated.
