Bill for right to education to be tabled soon

Allahabad: A bill to provide for the right to education is likely to be tabled in the forthcoming Budget Session of Parliament, Union Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh said on Saturday.

The Union Minister, who was here as the chief guest of the Allahabad University’s alumni meet expressed concern over the attempts to reduce education to a commodity which, he said, was an effective tool for empowering the marginalised sections of the society and protecting democratic institutions.

Mr. Singh, who emotionally recalled his own days as a student of the Allahabad University, also announced a grant of Rs 10 crore “for making its library the best in the world.”

Eminent personalities from various walks of life were present at the Senate Hall of the University and had a nostalgic trip around their alma mater which was given the status of a Central University two years ago. -- PTI
