BANGALORE: Posing as gold polishers, two men duped a woman and her daughter of their gold ornaments worth Rs. 1 lakh here on Thursday. The police said that around 4 p.m. two men came to florist Sathyanarayana’s house on J.M. Lane in Balepet. They told his wife, Shanthamma, and daughter, Geetha, that they had a special powder to polish gold and silver ornaments. They impressed the women by turning some tarnished silver articles into sparkling artefacts and Shanthamma gave them two gold chains and a pair of bangles for polishing. The strangers put the jewellery in a pressure cooker and asked Shanthamma to get some water. As she went inside, they asked Geetha to bring turmeric powder. Later, they put the water and turmeric powder in the cooker and told Shanthamma to boil it for 30 minutes. They left the place with a promise that they would return 30 minutes later, the police said. When the two did not come back even after an hour, Shanthamma opened the cooker and found the ornaments missing. She immediately telephoned her husband who was at his shop at K.R. Market. Subsequently, Sathyanarayana lodged a complaint with the Upparpet police. BurgledBurglars struck at two flats in an apartment on Brunton Road on Thursday and made away with a gold chain worth Rs. 20,000 and Rs. 10,000 in cash. The police said the thefts took place between noon and 1.45 p.m. at Royal Residency apartment on Brunton Road. The thieves gained entry by breaking open the locks of the main doors and stole the gold chain from Madhu’s house on the second floor and the cash from Subramanya’s house on the fourth floor. The Ulsoor police have registered cases. In another incident, burglars made away with a laptop and Rs. 40,000 in cash from a land developer’s office in Indiranagar on Thursday. The police said the thieves had broken open the rolling shutters of the ground and first floors of the office situated on 7th Main, 1st Stage, Indiranagar. After the incident came to light on Friday, the company’s manager, Satish Babu, lodged a complaint with the Indiranagar police. RecoveredThe Wilson Garden police arrested two youths on the charge of vehicle theft and recovered nine two-wheelers, together worth Rs. 3.5 lakh. The police gave their names as Afsar Pasha (21) and Mohammed Nazeer (20), both residents of Mangammanapalya on Hosur Road. Using fake keys, the two had stolen the vehicles from Wilson Garden, Adugodi, HSR Layout, Tilaknagar and MICO Layout police station limits, the police said. RaidedThe Central Crime Branch staff raided a hotel in Gandhinagar and a house in Cubbonpet and arrested 24 persons on the charge of gambling. The police seized Rs. 2.75 lakh stake money from them. Eight of the accused were arrested from the hotel, the police said. ArrestedIn another case, the CCB staff on Thursday arrested Madappa alias Madan Kumar (25) of V.V. Puram who was allegedly selling multimedia chips after illegally loading them with movie songs and porn. The police have seized from him a computer, memory chips, card readers, five mobile phones and other electronic goods, all worth Rs. 1 lakh. Run overA senior official of Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) was run over by Rani Chennamma Express at Yeshwanthpur railway station on Thursday. The Yeshwanthpur Railway police gave his name as S.B. Vijaykumar (43).
