‘Textile sector should diversify’
Special Correspondent
Bangalore: Any policy on textile and apparel industry should not exclude cotton growers who are the principal input suppliers, said H.K. Patil, MLC.
Speaking at a symposium on “Strategies for growth of Indian apparel industry,” organised by Bangalore University, he said that cotton growers were the worst victims of the agrarian crisis, and 50,000 of the 1.15 lakh farmers who committed suicide were cotton farmers. He argued for a unified vision of the industry that took into account everyone from the farmers and weavers to the final producers of readymade garments.
The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy said that the industry should diversify and spread to semi-urban and rural areas to generate more employment.
