When uniform fuelled rumours
Arunkumar Bhatt
MUMBAI: The stationing of the Mumbai police’s Anti-Riot Squad personnel outside the residence of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray here on Wednesday before his arrest added fuel to rumours.
The reason: their uniform. They were sporting the green and brown camouflage overalls, leading the onlookers to believe that they were either the Army or some para-military personnel.
Identity trouble
The Army has often protested against such uniforms, fearing that it would get the ‘wrong credit.’
The ‘wrong identity’ made people talk about the authorities’ fears of a large-scale violence in the city and the need to deploy the Army. “We only wanted to appear businesslike and tough ,” said a police officer.
Similar was the signal sent by the Rapid Action Force (RAF) because of its camouflage pattern blue uniform.
