More commuter amenities proposed at MRTS stations

Staff Reporter

Metropolitan Transport Corporation asked to provide bus connectivity

CHENNAI: Southern Railway proposes to take up a number of development works, particularly augmentation of commuter amenities, in the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) train network from Velachery to Beach.

A release said it had called for tenders from contractors for maintaining the vehicle parking lots at the Chindatripet, Thirumayilai, Kasturiba Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur and Taramani stations. Paid parking facility is available at Velachery. Though other stations have parking spaces, they suffer from lack of maintenance and absence of contractors. In order to speed up the issue of tickets during rush hour, Southern Railway intends to set up more counters at select stations and automated ticket vending machines at all MRTS stations within the next three months.

With the railway stations on the MRTS sector lacking inadequate illumination, it has taken steps to replace defective electrical fittings and to provide additional lights in areas where there are none. On the security front, personnel of the Railway Protection Force and the Government Railway Police have been deployed for all MRTS services. In addition, patrol units have been posted at major stations such as Thirumayilai and Velachery.

Southern Railway has requested Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) to provide bus connectivity to all stations and to start with, the transport corporation has agreed to provide such facilities to Chepauk, Light House and Taramani.

Approach roads

To improve the approach roads to the stations, Southern Railway has asked the Corporation and the Highways Department to improve the condition of the roads.

There is also a proposal to provide a catering facility at Thirumayilai, Thiruvanmiyur and Velachery.
