CHENNAI: In response to a news report ‘Accidents up in southern suburbs’ that appeared in these columns on Wednesday, Sunil Kumar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic), , said that the number of accidents on Chennai Bypass connecting Grand Southern Trunk Road with Bangalore Highway and those on Velachery Main Road had come down in 2007, compared to 2006. In a statement, he said that the Chennai Bypass witnessed 29 fatal accidents in 2006, compared to 24 in 2007. In 2005, 35 people were killed in accidents on this road. The increase in accidents in 2007 was not four times more compared to 2006 as reported. StatisticsMr. Kumar acknowledged that statistics in the report pertaining to fatal accidents on Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Radial Road was correct. He said that the Velachery Main Road had witnessed 46 fatal accidents in 2007 compared to 50 in 2006, a decrease of four. “The total number of fatal accidents during the current year is 1,110. The GST Road accounts for 76 fatal accidents. This is in no way anywhere near 50 per cent of the city fatal road accidents as quoted in your esteemed newspaper,” he said in the statement.
