HYDERABAD: Ved Prakash led the scoring spree with 13 goals to guide Haryana to a resounding 35-0 win over Puducherry in the Junior National hockey championship for boys at Gachibowli Complex here on Tuesday. But, its chances to qualify for the knock-out phase rested on Chandigarh pulling off a surprise win over the defending champion, Steel Authority of India Ltd., late in the evening. However, with SAIL notching up a hard-fought 2-1 win over Chandigarh, Haryana’s hopes of making it to the knock-out phase were effectively dashed.
The results: Haryana bt Puducherry 35-0 (Ved Prakash 13, Amit 5, Anil 4, Arjun 4, Sandeep Kumar 2, Nitin 2, Ajay, Anil, Rohan, Gagandeep, Kuldeep). Bengal 3 (Abhijit Biswas, Pawandeep, K. Virender) bt Kerala 1 (Sand); Mumbai bt Assam 13-0 (Mandeep Singh 3, Victo Singh 3, Davinder 2, Vikram Yadav 2, Rohan Mahatre 2, Virender Singh 1). Manipur bt Uttaranchal 4-0 (Wangamba 2, K. Chiglensana, Ihmlet). Jharkhand bt Bhopal 4-0 (Dilbar Toppo, Anil Xaxa 2, Jaarnath Oraon). Rajasthan 4 (Anish, Sunil Choudhary 2, Rajinder) bt Maharashtra 3 (Bushan, Omkar Ganndi, Ashutosh). SAIL 2 (Amardeep Ekka, Upender Pillay) bt Chandigarh 1 (Mohit Singh Thakur).
