News Analysis
In “Corrections and Clarifications” (February 12, 2008), we had made an entry correcting the spelling of the “Indian Film Censor Board”; it had been given as “Sensor Board”, in a photo-caption. The board is now known as the Central Board of Film Certification (Ministry of Information & Broadcasting). (The censorship of films is governed by The Cinematograph Act, 1952, the Cinematograph (Certification) Rules promulgated in 1983 and the guidelines issued on December 6, 1991. The guidelines are issued under Section 5B of the Act. This section says that “a film shall not be certified for public exhibition, if, in the opinion of the authority competent to grant the certificate, the film or any part of it is against the interests of the sovereignty and integrity of India, the security of the States, friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality or involves defamation or contempt of court or is likely to incite the commission of any offence.”) A sentence in the second paragraph of a report “Darwin’s legacy” (Editorial, February 12, 2008) was “In an essay strikingly titled ‘nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of revolution,’ the geneticist and evolutionary biologist Theodosius Dobzhansky declared: “Without that light [biology] becomes a pile of sundry facts — some of them interesting or curious but making no meaningful picture as a whole.” “Revolution” should have been “evolution”. In The Hindu Crossword 9143 (February 11, 2008), clue 2 Down was “Make a collection for pandas, those hurt badly (4,5,3,3)”. A reader said that the solution was “Pass round the hat”, which would mean make a collection. If so, the phrase would read to mean circumvent the hat or side-step the hat. The expression “pass around the hat” or “pass round the hat” is also correct, though “pass the hat around” or “pass the hat round” seems to be more idiomatic. The Chambers Dictionary records only “pass (or send) round the hat”. The first paragraph of a report “India plays Russia” (“Sport”, February 11, 2008) was “India will meet Russia in its opening league fixture in the men’s Olympic qualifying tournament to be held in Santiago, Chile, from March 1 to 9, according to the revised schedule released on Sunday.” The name of the sport was left out. It is the men’s hockey Olympic qualifiers. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
