HYDERABAD: Andhra knocked out host Hyderabad 5-4 via tie-breaker in a league match of the 4th Junior National hockey championship for boys (under-18) at the Gachibowli Complex here on Monday. With Nagaland and Himachal Pradesh pulling out, Andhra and Hyderabad had to play only one match today. It was a must-win situation for both teams to qualify for the quarterfinals. Hyderabad shot into lead in the seventh minute when Mohd. Jawar latched on to a quick cross from the right flank by R. Durga Prasad to find the target. Splendid recoveryAndhra recovered quickly from the setback with the speedy S. Ramesh, Ramesh Krishna and Kiran Babu working in tandem. A splendid one-to-one effort between Ramesh and Kiran culminated in a goal for Andhra when the unmarked Kiran scored in the 20th minute. Andhra took the lead when Kiran Babu steered clear of the defence to find the target off a perfect centre from the right. But Andhra’s joy was shortlived when Sai of Hyderabad was fortunate to see his feeble effort off a deflection from his teammate N. Mahender saw the ball roll into the goal to level the scores (2-2). With the teams locked two-all at full-time, tie-breaker rule was applied. R. Siva Kumar and N. Mahender scored for Hyderabad while Stalin, Keerthi and S. Ramesh were successful for the winner.
