“AIADMK MLA bought land violating rules”

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday alleged that an All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam MLA had “purchased” land allotted to the heirs of Veerapandia Kattabomman, violating government rules.

In a statement here, Mr. Karunanidhi said the 202 heirs of Kattabomman were given three acres each by the then DMK government in 1974 on condition that it should not be sold. In case the land was sold, the allotment would be invalid and the land, reverted to the Forest Department.

AIADMK MLA P. Mohan, representing the Ottapidaram constituency, purchased the land from two heirs at a “throw away” price and set up a petrol bunk and a quarry. He said AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa should pull up her party MLA for violating the rules before criticising the DMK government.

The Chief Minister also refuted Ms. Jayalalithaa’s charge that the State government had failed to bring to the notice of the Central government for stipulating 60 per cent mark for availing post-matric scholarships by SC/ST students. The State had already announced that it would continue to give scholarships to the students irrespective of the marks they had scored.

An announcement was also made by him at the Assembly on February 1 while replying to the debate on motion of thanks to the Governor’s address. Ms. Jayalalithaa had no time to hear his reply, he added.
