FLYING THROUGH CHENNAI: Tourists might be able to zip through the city on the MRTS in the near future.

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) plans to rope in the Chennai-Beach to Velachery Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS), for its hop-on-hop-off rail tour.

Giving details of the new proposal to be implemented jointly by the TTDC and the Southern Railway, the Commissioner of Tourism and Managing Director of the Corporation, M. Rajaram, said the hop-on-hop-off rail tour would be an extension of the existing TTDC’s rail-cum-road tour.

Under consideration

“We have written to the Southern Railway authorities and the proposal is under active consideration and examination of the Railway authorities. The Corporation will be soon chalking out the modalities of the new MRTS rail tour covering important tourist spots in Chennai,” Mr.Rajaram told The Hindu on Saturday.

Glimpse of tourist attractions

“This tourist-friendly initiative will mainly benefit those transiting through Chennai, predominantly through long-haul express trains and the TTDC’s endeavour is to give them a glimpse of the Chennai’s tourist attractions covering the Snake Park, Kapaleeswarar Temple, Marina Beach, Valluvar Kottam, Museum, and the Fort St. George,” he said.

Since the MRTS moves through the beach area and goes right up to Velachery, tourists would get a bird’s eye view of the “best parts of the city.”

“We are making a small beginning to effectively promote the MRTS rail network,” Mr.Rajaram said.

Bus tours

The Corporation has also planned to introduce hop-on-hop-off sight seeing bus tours to Mamallapuram and a separate city-sightseeing tour with the State Road Transport Corporation providing the bus.
