BROOKING NO CHALLENGE: University of Mumbai players are ecstatic after clinching the all-India inter-varsity cricket championship.

CHENNAI: University of Mumbai cruised to victory in the final of the Rohinton Baria inter-University cricket tournament, defeating University of Madras here at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday.

Having dismissed Madras for 196 on the first day, Mumbai completed the eight-wicket win 40 minutes after lunch on the second. Madras, to its credit, didn’t stop fighting. But, it couldn’t prevent Mumbai’s batsmen from consolidating the advantage their bowlers had earned.

Top-3 get going

Openers Dinar Gaonkar and Praful Waghela and one-drop batsman Parag Madkaikar made half-centuries to help Mumbai to 199 for two in 43.5 overs.

Waghela hit nine fours in his 76-ball 63, dominating the opening stand of 101. Gaonkar, left-handed and little, worked well off his pads and remained unbeaten on 66 (120b, 9x4). He had his share of fortune however — he was dropped twice.

M. Raja forced Gaonkar to edge the fourth ball of the innings, but the slip catcher couldn’t hold on. Gaonkar was also reprieved on 48. Raja eventually caught Waghela off his bowling, and tested Madkaikar with outswing during a spell before lunch. But, Mumbai had the chase in control.

Madkaikar hastened the finish, striking the ball cleanly. He hit five sixes in his 51-ball 56 before falling to Senthil Kumar while attempting the sixth.

Thrilling win for SRM

Meanwhile at Presidency College, SRM University won the losing semifinalists’ encounter thanks to an unbroken stand of 107 (in 105 balls) for the last wicket between K.H. Gopinath (94 n.o.) and K. Shri Vasudeva Das (34 n.o.).

The scores: final: University of Madras 196 in 88.1 overs lost to University of Mumbai 199 for two in 43.5 overs (Dinar Gaonkar 66 n.o., Praful Waghela 63, Parag Madkaikar 56).

Losing semifinalists: Guru Nanak Dev University 266 in 79.4 overs lost to SRM University 267 for nine in 66.4 overs (K.H. Gopinath 94 n.o., K.B. Arun Karthick 42, Rahul Sharma six for 103).
