Water and sewer connection charges revised
K. Lakshmi
CHENNAI: Chennai Metrowater has hiked its charges for providing new water and sewer connections with effect from February 1.
The water supply connection charge for independent houses with built-up area of 100 sq. m. is Rs.5,000 and those up to 200 sq. m. Rs.7,500. The same amount will be collected for sewer connection. Earlier, the water supply connection charge for similar structures with built-up area up to 200 sq. m. was Rs.1,930 and Rs.3,395 for sewer connection.
For apartment complexes and non-residential buildings such as shopping complexes, charges for water and sewer connections are Rs.7,500 each for every 100 sq.m. of built space.
Those seeking renewal of service connection and reconnection for existing buildings have to pay Rs.7,500.
About 20,000 water and sewer connections are provided every year. The last time the charges were revised was in the year 2000.
A senior Metrowater official said increase in road cut and labour charges had contributed to the hike.
About Rs.10,000 (water) and Rs.7,300 (sewer) were spent on each connection by Metrowater.
