HYDERABAD: St. Mary’s College (Yousufguda) got the better of VNR College 42-32 in the final of the inaugural inter-collegiate basketball tournament at the Sanathnagar Playground here on Thursday. The winner led 25-10 at the break. Junior international M. Varun Dev led from the front in the company of Rohit to give St. Mary’s 16 points in the first-quarter, while its opponents could manage only six. St. Mary’s continued its superiority in the second quarter too with Kanna playing his role as a schemer well. It was Kanna’s brilliant passes that saw Varun score from the pivot, while Rohit used his speed and quick reflexes to score from fast-breaks and drive-in shots. The defence of the losers left much to be desired and it was only in the second half that Dhruv and Revanth could score to reduce the lead at the final whistle. Varun and Rohit scored 11 points each for the winner, while for the loser, Dhruv and Revanth scored 10 and six points respectively. Rohit of St. Mary’s College was declared the Most Valuable Player. Other results: Finals: Men: YMCA (Sec’bad Academy) 30 (Rahul 14, David 10) bt Sec’bad Rovers 18. Women: YMCA (Sec’bad) 28 (Asha 10 Sharunya 12) bt St. Anthony’s GHS 12.
