Central Excise topples KSEB

THIRUVALLA: Central Excise, Kochi, dethroned defending champion KSEB with an 8-7 sudden-death victory and marched to the semifinals of the 32nd Kerala State inter-club football championship at the Public Stadium here on Monday evening.

The teams were level 1-1 at the end of the regulation period with the goals coming from Excise’s Vineeth Antony (11th minute) and KSEB’s Donald Kenny (35th), and then 4-4 in the tie-breaker.

The result (quarterfinal): Central Excise 8 bt KSEB 7.

Shafir, Jigeesh shine

Shafir Iqbal (five for 32) and Jigeesh (71 n.o.) sparkled as Jolly Rovers, Perinthalmanna, drubbed Arcon CC (Kunnamkulam) by seven wickets and entered the quarterfinals of the 21st E.P. Pavoo memorial all-Kerala cricket tournament at the St. Thomas College Ground, Thrissur, on Monday.

The scores (pre-quarterfinals): Arcon, Kunnamkulam 181 in 29 overs (Sherinmon 50, Shafir Iqbal five for 32) lost to Jolly Rovers, Perinthalmanna 185 for three in 25.3 overs (Jigeesh 71 n.o.).

Pioneers CC, Cherpu 147 for nine in 30 overs (Ganashyam 37, P.Praseed three for 18) lost to Sussex, Kozhikode 151 for four in 19.9 overs (Jayaraj 69, Nikhil Madhavan four for 36).

Marian, Nehru Advance

The host Marian College and Nehru College (Kanhangad) posted comfortable wins in the third Mar Mathew Vattakuzhy all-Kerala inter-collegiate basketball tournament at Kuttikanam on Monday.

The scores: Marian, Kuttikanam 42 (Belgin K. Thomas 15) bt Mar Augusthinose, Ramapuram 24).

Nehru College, Kanhangad 51 (Shaiju Joseph 18, C.S.Ajith 14, Sharath 10) bt St Albert’s, Ernakulam 24 (Kelvin Roy 12).

Double for Ramesh

Thiruvananthapuram’s M.R. Ramesh won a double in the Mundakayam all-Kerala veterans tennis tournament, organised by the Idukki District Tennis Association, at the Mundakayam Club and Kuttikanam courts in Idukki. He bagged the 45 to 55 years singles and doubles titles.

The results (finals): 45-55 years, singles: M.R. Ramesh (Tvm) bt M.K. Manoj (Ekm) 8-6. Doubles: M.R. Ramesh & S. Rajeev (Tvm) bt Rasheed Shah & M.K.Manoj (Ekm) 8-3. 55-65 years, singles: Rajan Mathew (Ekm) bt Ram Mohan (Ekm) 8-2. Doubles: A.M. Peter & Ram Mohan (Ekm) bt P.S. Binu & George Mathew (Ekm) 8-6.

AOC in last four

AOC (Secunderabad) defeated Armed Police (Chennai) 70-57 to enter the men’s semifinals of the 25th Thebasco South India basketball tournament at the Sacred Heart School, Thevara, on Monday.

Earlier, Kochi YMCA defeated the host Thebasco Club 56-44 in the veterans semifinals.

The results: Men’s quarterfinal: AOC (Secunderbad) 70 (P.N. Rajesh 19, Sanjay 11) bt Armed Police (Chennai) 57 (Bharathi Das 12). Veterans semifinals: Fort Kochi YMCA bt Thebasco (Thevara) 56-44.

Facile win

The host Choice School and Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Tripunithura, posted convincing wins in the first Anand Dev memorial inter-school cricket tournament which began at the Tripunithura Palace Oval on Monday.

The scores (league): NSS, Tripunithura 89 in 18.1 overs (Ram Shanker four for 23) lost to Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Tripunithura 90 for three in 18 overs (Achuth 41).

Vidyodaya, Thevakkal 72 in 18 overs (Rony three for 17) lost to Choice School, Tripunithura 73 for one in 5.4 overs (Kethan 25).
