SAI triumphs

HYDERABAD: Goalkeeper Md. Javed was the star performer bringing off four brilliant saves in the tie-breaker to help defending champion Sports Authority of India (STC, Begumpet) retain the trophy with a 3-1 win over AOC Centre in the final of the fifth Rajiv Gandhi invitation hockey tournament, organised by Mohammadan Sporting Club, at the Gymkhana Grounds here on Saturday.

In the first half, R. Swamy of AOC and M. Nagaraj of SAI were shown yellow cards by referee Mohd. Ilyas for unruly behaviour.

The referee made them to sit out for 15 minutes on the bench.

Within seconds after they were back in action, AOC had the misfortune of seeing its frontline player L. Ramesh sit on the bench for another such offence.

With the teams locked goalless at full-time, tie-breaker rule was applied in which K. Satyamaheshwar Rao, P.V.G. Tilak and Sandeep Raju were successful for SAI while only Satyaprakash was on target for the Armymen.

HHA joint secretary Bheem Singh presented a special prize of Rs. 500 for M.A. Khalid for being the most promising player of the event.

Anjan Kumar Yadav, MP, gave away the prizes.

Mahaboobnagar in final

Mahaboobnagar recorded a comfortable, 36-run win over Khammam in a semifinal of the Kasani Krishna Mudiraj memorial trophy inter-district Twenty-20 cricket tournament here.

The scores: Semifinals: Mahaboobnagar 162 for five in 20 overs (Madhu Mohan 66 n.o.) bt Khammam 126 for nine (Raj Kumar 42).

Adilabad 135 for two (Mukesh 45) bt Karimnagar 113.

Saivelu passes away

R. Saivelu, former national hockey player of the 80s, passed away here after a brief illness. He was 50.

He was an employee of the South Central Railway. Hyderabad Hockey Association secretary P. Kantaiah expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.

Kachiguda wins title

Government High School (Kachiguda) and Kasturba College won the boys and girls titles respectively in the 68th All India Industrial Exhibition Society netball tournament here.

The results: Finals: Boys: Govt Boys High School, Kachiguda bt Govt Boys High School, Shah Ali Banda 15-13.

Girls: Kasturba College bt Care Model High School 13-10.
