Varun, John shine

Bangalore: Varun Chinnappa and John Verghese struck a brace each as Canara Bank defeated DBHA 6-1 in a Field Marshal Cariappa Memorial hockey tournament match here on Saturday.

Varun scored in the second and 45th minutes while John Verghese scored in the 21st and 29th minutes.

B. Bopaiah (56th min.) and Kaveriappa (67th min.) also scored for the victors while Chengappa scored DBHA’s lone goal in the 16th minute.

In another match MEG held SAI to a 1-1 draw. C.A. Kalappa scored for SAI in the 11th minute and Ponnappa equalised for MEG in the 33rd minute.

Badminton tournament

The Veteran National badminton championship will be held at Hyderabad from February 24 to 28. The tournament will feature 45 plus age-groups for men and 35 plus age-groups for women. Karnataka players interested to compete in the championship can contact the Karnataka Badminton Association (Ph: 22263686, 22254758).
