Uproar in J&K House
Staff Reporter
Jammu: The Jammu and Kashmir legislative assembly was adjourned sine die and the budget session cut short by 10 days amidst protests on Wednesday by the Opposition against alleged corruption in the forest department.
As soon as the session began on Wednesday, the Opposition National Conference members were up in arms demanding the sacking of Forest Minister Qazi Mohammed Afzal and his predecessor Tariq Hameed Karra who now holds the Finance portfolio.
An official inquiry headed by the present Chief Secretary B.R. Kundal had indicated irregularities in the forest department when Mr. Karra and Mr. Qazi Afzal held the forest portfolio.
The Speaker adjourned the House five minutes into the question hour. When the House reassembled in the afternoon, the Opposition once again tried to rake up the issue. The grants of more than a dozen ministries were passed with voice vote in less than half an hour, amid noisy protests from the Opposition. Speaker Tara Chand then declared the House adjourned sine die.
